Cairns & Port Douglas
The gateway to the Great Barrier Reef
This beautiful city is located at the Great Barrier Reef, but right away you feel like you are in a tropical rainforest. There is a lagoon available the whole year around because during the summer months you cannot swim in the ocean without a stinger suit. You can do everything you want here, “only” 3 rainforests to choose from.
My recommendations
- Great Barrier Reef trips, including snorkelling, intro diving and/or certified diving.
- Your open water or advanced dive course.
- Overnight or multiple days to the reef.
- River rafting on the Tully River.
- Kuranda train and Sky rail.
- Cape Tribulation day trip or overnight.
- Tablelands (swimming in waterfalls).
- Bungee jumping and the swing.
- Campervan/car hire.

A Taste of Tour Options From Cairns
A pretty scenic road to paradise
This city is about a 1.5-hour drive away from Cairns and there is a very pretty scenic road to take. Make sure that you don’t forget to stop in Palm Cove, the most beautiful beach around Cairns if you ask me. Please don’t go swimming in the ocean, there are loads of crocodiles and also stingers from around November till May. A lot of beaches have stinger nets but I wouldn’t take the risk.
My recommendations
- Great Barrier reef trips, including snorkelling, intro diving and/or certified diving.
